Question about forge welding high carbon steel. I was ready to give up after 5 failed attempts, then tried sprinkling borax on the joint before the final heat.

Grandma's borax trick is a lifesaver. I've saved so many projects with that little sprinkle, it's like magic.

My grandma used borax for everything and we turned out fine. The amount you'd actually get from cleaning is tiny. Feels like people are making a bigger deal out of it than the science says.
