An old smith named Walt watched me quench a leaf spring in water and just shook his head before showing me the oil method on his anvil, and I have not quenched a spring in water since, has anyone else had one of those moments where you realize you have been doing something basic all wrong?

Hits me right in the gut, man. It's like that time I spent years using a dull knife to cut rope and one old timer just handed me a cheap pair of shears. Makes you wonder how many other little things we just accept as the right way because nobody ever showed us different. I see it everywhere now, like people struggling with a stuck jar lid for five minutes when a quick tap on the counter would pop it right off. We get stuck in our own heads and routines, thinking there's only one way to do a thing. Walt probably saved you more than busted springs, he probably saved you a whole lot of wasted time and frustration.
