The forge welding trick that took me 20 years to learn
Back in 2007 I struggled with forge welding mild steel in my shop near Dayton. Tried every flux and heat range I could read about, still got cold shuts more often than not. Then an old timer told me to clean the scale off with a wire brush right before the final heat, not just once but twice. He said the second brush gets the fresh oxide that forms in the few seconds after the first pass. Tried it on a chain link project last month and it welded clean on the first strike, every single joint. Anyone else have a basic step that they skipped for years and then felt silly about once it clicked?
