Why does nobody talk about forge welding with rebar, it took 3 tries last night
I see everyone pushing expensive high-carbon stock for Damascus and pattern welding, but I grabbed some scrap rebar from a job site in Phoenix and it moved way better than I expected. I read a 1987 issue of the old Anvil's Ring that said rebar's varying steel content actually makes for wilder grain patterns if you keep the heat steady. Anyone else messing with salvaged rebar or am I wasting my coal on junk metal?
Rebar’s the most inconsistent metal you’ll ever weld, that’s the thing. One bar might be soft and fold clean, the next one’s got hard spots that crack on you, so getting a wild pattern is more luck than skill. You got three tries out of it, which is fine for practice, but I’d rather spend the money on known stock than gamble my coal on scrap that might fall apart in the quench.
