Heard a kid call Pink Floyd elevator music, felt ancient
Was at a vintage record shop in Portland last Saturday, flipping through some old LPs when this teenager pointed at a Dark Side of the Moon copy and said it sounded like elevator music. I laughed at first but then got to thinking. I remember saving up my lawn mowing cash in 1987 to buy that album on cassette, lying on my bedroom floor with headphones on just to catch every little sound in the mix. That kid will never know the patience of waiting for the needle to drop or flipping the tape over at the exact right moment. It's not about being better or worse, it's just a totally different way of listening now. Makes me wonder, what old albums do you guys think are genuinely overrated because of the hype, and which ones still hold up if you hear them fresh today?
Is it just me or does every generation think the music they grew up with took more effort to enjoy? I remember sitting through whole albums just to catch that one song, and now my nephew skips tracks before the first chorus even hits, but honestly he listens to way more varied stuff in a week than I did in a whole year back then. The real difference is patience versus variety, and neither one is wrong, it's just that the whole idea of what an album is for has changed on us.
