PSA: GoldenEye paintball mode in 1998 ruined me for modern shooters

Back in the day my buddy Dave and I would sit on the same couch in his basement in Rochester for 4 hours straight playing split screen GoldenEye with paintball mode on, and nobody complained about frame rates or matchmaking. Tried a new online shooter last weekend and got smoked in 30 seconds by some kid who paid for a better gun, and I just turned it off. Old games made you earn your wins with the same weapons as everyone else. Am I just old, or did unlocking stuff used to actually mean something?
