Saw my grandkid playing GoldenEye on a modern TV and it looked awful...

Loaded up the old N64 at their place last Christmas and the framerate was jarring compared to how I remembered it on our CRT back in 97. Has anyone else found that some of these classics just don't hold up on new screens or is it just me getting old?

Grabbed an old CRT from a local thrift shop for like 20 bucks and hooked the N64 up to it. Honestly the difference is night and day, the games look way smoother and the colors pop better on that old tube. Tried playing Mario 64 on a flat screen and the input lag was driving me nuts, felt like I was wading through mud. The CRT fixed all that, now it feels just like I remember from back in the day. Ngl if you really wanna relive those classics, tracking down a CRT is totally worth the hassle.

Used to think you guys were crazy about CRTs but @claire_young76 got me. Totally get it now.

Oh man, that takes me back. My buddy Mike dug his old N64 out of his parents' basement a couple years ago and was all excited to show his kid GoldenEye. He hooked it up to his 55-inch flat screen and was so bummed out, said everything looked blocky and the aiming felt way off. He ended up finding a free CRT on Facebook Marketplace from some old lady who just wanted it gone. He brought it over to my place once he got it set up and I swear the difference was crazy. The whole game just felt way more responsive and looked a million times better, even with the lower resolution. I think there's something about how those old screens handle the signal that newer ones just can't do right.

Yeah, the "input lag was driving me nuts" part is spot on. If you can find a free CRT off Craigslist or a curb alert, it's a cheap fix that makes those old games actually playable again.
