That $60 laserdisc player is now a paperweight on my shelf

I got hyped on a forum thread about how Laserdisc was the true HD experience before Blu-ray, so I bought a Pioneer CLD-D504 off eBay for $60 plus shipping. Got it in, cleaned the lens, and the picture looked like a fuzzy VHS tape on my 4K TV. Turns out the discs are $15-$30 each at the local thrift store and barely any movies got released in widescreen anyway. Anyone else fall for the nostalgia trap on old formats or is it just me?
