That one afternoon my CRT monitor blew a capacitor in 2005

I was deep into a Diablo II ladder session in my parents basement in Columbus, Ohio when my old Sony Trinitron just let out this pop and the screen went dark. Took me two weeks to save up $60 for a used one off Craigslist but by then my level 87 hammerdin was already obsolete. Has anyone else had a gaming setup failure ruin a perfect run like this?

$60 for a used CRT in 2005 was buying someone else’s capacitor problem waiting to pop.

That popping sound is burned into my memory too, but the real question is why we all kept playing on those CRTs when LCDs were already getting cheap. By 2005 you could pick up a 17 inch LCD for around $200 at Circuit City. Not saying everyone had that cash laying around, but monitor failures like that were a known risk with those heavy tubes after a few years. A lot of players back then treated the occasional capacitor pop like some rite of passage when it was really just planned obsolescence catching up to tech that was already outdated.

Monitors are just another thing they stopped building to last. @west.casey
