Appreciation post: our Catan group survived a 4 hour meltdown when the robber took my last sheep
So last Friday we had our usual 4 player Catan night at my buddy Dave's place in Sacramento, and about 90 minutes in things went sideways. I was one road away from Longest Road and had 9 points, feeling good. Then my friend Priya rolled a 7, moved the robber onto my only sheep hex, and I lost my whole trade engine in one turn. I got kind of quiet about it, which I hate admitting, and Dave asked if I was mad maybe three times. The game dragged another 2 and a half hours because nobody could close it out, and we ended at like 1am with Priya winning on a lucky dev card. What got me was we still sat around talking about it for 40 more minutes instead of packing up. Has your group ever had one bad roll or one robber move just kill the mood for the whole table?
Did your table ever get stuck in that weird place where everyone is too annoyed to play good but too stubborn to quit? We had almost the same thing last month. My wife had 9 points and just needed one more city, then I rolled a 7 and parked the robber on her only brick hex. She went totally silent for like 20 minutes and nobody would trade with anyone after that. What killed me was we played another two hours and the whole time it felt like we were just going through the motions. We finally called it a draw at midnight and sat in the kitchen eating chips for another half hour just venting about it.
