Checked out the new game cafe in Springfield and the owner had a weird rule

They make you pay a $5 'sleeve fee' if you bring your own card protectors for their demo games. He said it was for 'wear and tear' but the demo boxes were already beat up. Has anyone else run into a charge like that?

My buddy got hit with that at a place in the suburbs last year. He brought his own nice sleeves for a board game demo and they charged him three bucks at the register, called it a "materials fee." He just stood there blinking while the guy explained it. We still bring it up when a place seems a bit too strict about their rules.

Remember xena_bailey18's story? Same weird vibes.

Sounds like the owner is running a protection racket for card protectors. Honestly, charging you extra to protect his own beat-up demo stuff is next level. Tbh that fee is probably just to cover the cost of his own weird control issues. I'd take my business and my sleeves somewhere that doesn't nickel and dime over basic game care. That kind of rule just makes the whole place feel cheap.

Ever think that fee is just about the owner being cheap? I used to see it that way too, but @gavin365's point about it covering worn-out demo stuff actually makes sense. It still feels bad, but I get why a shop might do it now.
