Got told my game collection was 'too much' by a friend and it made me rethink things

A buddy came over last month to play some board games and he looked around my shelf and said 'you have over 50 games, do you even play half of these?' I got defensive at first but then I counted and yeah, about 15 still had the shrink wrap on. So I started a rule where I have to play a game three times before I buy a new one. Has anyone else had to cut back on buying when your shelf starts looking like a store?

Used to be one of those people who thought more games meant more fun, but a clear-out last year changed my mind. Saw I had about 20 games I'd never touched and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Started a one-in-one-out rule and it forced me to actually appreciate what I own. Now I spend more time playing less games and it feels way better. Got rid of the shrink-wrap guilt pretty quick too. Sometimes a little reality check is what you need to stop drowning in plastic.

Is it really that serious though? I mean, call me old fashioned but a game sitting in its plastic is just an unplayed game, not some heavy moral burden. I've got a stack of games I bought on a whim and never got around to, and it doesn't bother me one bit. Those are just future options for a rainy day or a long weekend. Maybe the real issue is feeling guilty about spending the money, not the plastic itself. I'd rather have the choice to pick something up later than feel forced to play something just to clear a shelf. But if tossing a few boxes makes you feel lighter, I guess that's its own kind of fun.

Shrink-wrap guilt" is a pretty heavy label for some unplayed games sitting on a shelf. It's just plastic and cardboard, not a life sentence. But hey, if the one-in-one-out thing helps you sleep better, whatever works for you.

30 games in plastic here. They don't bother me one bit. Still gonna play them eventually or sell them later.
