My buddy swore I'd ruin Catan by using the expansion pack wrong
He told me to add the Seafarers ships after the tiles were set. I ignored him just to prove a point, and my first island had no way to cross the water for 45 minutes. Has anyone else made a simple setup mistake that backfired instantly?

Respectfully, that sounds less like a mistake and more like a learning experience. Catan's whole deal is adapting on the fly, so 45 minutes stuck on your own island just means you got a crash course in why reading the rulebook matters. Running around without ships is basically playing on hard mode, and it sounds like you earned that lesson.

45 minutes? Sam, are you telling me you sat there staring at the water for 45 whole minutes before realizing something was off? I wouldve flipped the board over at the 10 minute mark and called it a night. Youve got more patience than me, buddy, no way I could just sit there watching my settlements collect dust while everyone else sailed around. Sounds like your buddy tried to warn you but you had to learn the hard way, which is basically the story of every Catan game Ive ever played honestly.
