Our game group's annual 'Catan' tournament got rained out, so we improvised with a 12-hour 'Twilight Imperium' marathon instead.

You're making it sound way harder than it is. The jump from Catan to Twilight Imperium isn't that crazy if your group likes board games. A lot of people who play one heavy game are ready for another. The rules explanation for Twilight Imperium only takes like twenty minutes if someone already knows it well. They had twelve hours to fill, so a long game makes perfect sense for a rainy day. Why is it so hard to believe a game group could handle a big box game?

Wait, how do you go from a quick Catan tournament to a full Twilight Imperium game? Those are totally different time commitments. Catan is maybe an hour, but Twilight Imperium is a whole day project even with experienced players. Setting up and learning the rules alone would take half your rainy day. Did your whole group already know how to play that monster of a game?

Actually, the time commitment is the whole point (a rainy day marathon needs a game that fills it). A group willing to do a Catan tournament clearly enjoys long sessions together. They probably saw the weather and just decided to go all in on their free day.
