Pro tip: I was totally wrong about roll-and-write games

I used to think roll-and-write games were just boring bingo with dice, but a buddy forced me to try Cartographers at a meetup last month. Filling in that map with different terrain shapes actually got my brain working in a fun way. Has anyone else had a game genre surprise them like that?
