Question about expansions: did you ever skip one and wish you hadn't?

I skipped the 5-6 player expansion for my favorite worker placement game because my group is usually just 4. Last month two friends came to visit and we had to play something else, and honestly the vibe was off. Has anyone else made that call and later paid for it?
