TIL a 30 year old rule from a random guy in a FLGS saved my campaign

Some older player at the counter in Portland told me to always reroll the dice tower's tray before a big battle, I laughed it off, then two games later my dice went cold at the worst possible moment and I lost a 4 hour session. Has anyone else had a weird superstition from a stranger that actually held up, or was I just in my own head?
