Unpopular opinion: I chose the original 1995 Catan box art over the new edition for my shelf.

Everyone at my local group said the new art was cleaner, but the old one just feels right, like a worn-in game board. Has anyone else picked the 'worse' version just because it felt more authentic?

Totally get that, my old Monopoly board is a stained mess but I love it.

Monopoly boards are meant to look worn out. Shows they've been used. The stains are proof of good times. You're right to love it, foster.jordan. A perfect board is a sad board. It means no one ever played it.

My friend's board got a coffee stain and she threw it out. Is a stained game really proof of fun, or just proof of a clumsy player? Maybe a clean board just means people put their drinks on a coaster.

Well, there goes 20 bucks down the drain because of a little coffee. I've had board games with everything from wine spills to mystery sticky spots, and I just wipe them down and keep playing. A clean board might mean coasters are involved, but it could also mean nobody's had a laugh loud enough to knock over a drink. Throwing out a game over a stain feels like throwing out a good book because you dropped it in the bath. The fun is in the chaos, not the condition of the cardboard. So yes, a stained game is proof of fun, and also proof that someone needs to learn how to hold a mug.
