Used to think I needed every expansion for a game to be complete
Now I just get the base box and maybe one extra if it's a favorite. Realized after dropping $80 on a game I only played twice that the hype isn't worth it. Anyone else feel like the collector's urge is a trap?

Expansions are what keep my favorite games fresh for years.

Oh man, I feel this. I have a whole shelf of shame that's just base games plus their lonely, untouched expansions. Bought the big deluxe version of that one space game because the box looked cool. Played it once, spent more time sorting pieces than actually playing. Now it just judges me from the closet. What was your $80 regret?

Sorting pieces for an hour isn't the real trap, it's the fun part for some of us. The real trap is buying a game that needs four people who all have the same free weekend. That's what kills it. My $80 regret was a fancy worker placement game that needs exactly three players at all times. It's impossible to get to the table. I bet @nguyen.morgan knows that lonely feeling too, when a game just sits there because the rules demand a crowd you don't have.

Ever unpack a game for an hour just to learn it? That's the real trap. I see you @nguyen.morgan with your space game collection. My shelf has a big box dungeon crawler that needs a full day to set up. The expansion is still in plastic. Feels like a part time job just to play a game.
