Winning a game on a technicality felt hollow
Last Friday at the local game shop in Oakwood, I won a round of Twilight Imperium because someone forgot to refresh their fighters. Everyone groaned and said my victory was cheap. I sat there feeling like I cheated myself out of a real win. Has anyone else won a game but felt like you actually lost something?

The real problem is you let everyone else's reaction define your win. If you played by the rules and the other person forgot their fighters, that's on them, not you. Games like TI are long and complex, and part of the skill is not making dumb mistakes. That guy who forgot his fighters probably learned a hard lesson that day, and you helped him learn it by not letting it slide. Your win wasn't hollow, it was a teaching moment for the whole table. The only thing you actually lost was the chance to feel good about your win because you let the groaning get in your head.

My buddy Dave once won a Warhammer tournament because his opponent showed up 15 minutes late and got disqualified. He took the trophy home but never even unpacked it from the box. Said it felt worse than losing clean.
