A retired boilermaker at the hardware store gave me some solid advice

I was grabbing some 6010 rods in Billings last fall, and an older guy saw my rig. He said, 'Kid, always check your ground clamp before you strike an arc, a bad connection will ruin your whole day.' It was such a simple thing, but I think about it every single time I set up now. What's the best piece of old-school advice you've gotten on the job?

Check your oil before starting any engine, even if you just changed it.

Even if you just changed it? That's some serious trust issues with your own work right there.

So you're saying I should check my own work twice, like I'm my own worst boss?

Take that idea and run with it. Once you get in the habit of treating your own work like a mechanic treats a car, you catch tiny problems before they turn into big ones.
