Blew a gasket on a 6 inch line before I figured out my torque pattern was off
Was working a pressure vessel repair at the Marathon refinery in Gary last month and kept getting leaks on the same bolt every time. Turned out I was tightening them all in a circle instead of cross-pattern. Took a 20 year veteran pointing at my wrench and saying 'you're fighting yourself, kid' for it to click. Anyone else learn basic stuff way later than they should have?

Right? "Nobody writes down the obvious stuff" until you're chasing leaks all day.

nobody writes down the obvious stuff until someone messes it up" - yeah that's the truth, learned that the hard way on a boiler last spring

Funny how the smallest thing like bolt order can turn a simple job into a whole afternoon of frustration. My dad taught me that cross-pattern trick when I was helping him fix lawnmower engines as a kid (he was a real stickler for it), but nobody ever explained WHY it mattered until I blew a head gasket on my own car. The real kicker is that a lot of those "basic" lessons get overlooked because the old-timers assume you just know it. Maybe it's less about learning late and more about how nobody writes down the obvious stuff until someone messes it up.
