Can we talk about the time I spent 4 hours trying to get a perfect fit on a 24-inch pipe flange in a tight corner

I was convinced I could eyeball the final tack welds, but the heat distortion was way worse than I thought and I had to cut it out and start over twice, which really makes you respect the old school method of using a full jig every single time, doesn't it?

So what finally made you break down and build the full jig for the third try? I've been there where you fight the process until the wasted hours add up and force your hand. That's exactly what @murphy.tessa means about learning the hard way, you just have to get burned by the shortcut first. Is there a specific part of the fit-up that kept tricking you, or was it purely the heat pulling everything out of square?

Sometimes you just have to learn the hard way, @nguyen.angela.

Yeah, it's funny how that happens with everything. You try to save ten minutes by skipping a step, and it costs you half the day. I do it cooking all the time, thinking I don't need to measure something, and then the whole meal is off. Or trying to put furniture together without really reading the guide. That shortcut always comes back to bite you.
