I always skipped the face shield until a spark flew into my eye. Never again.

Yeah that line about the spark flying into your eye really got me. It only takes one second of bad luck to change everything. I used to think small jobs didn't need full gear either, until I got a nasty metal shaving stuck in my cheek. The pain is so sharp and sudden it makes your whole body freeze. Now my shield goes on before I even pick up the tool, no exceptions. That burning feeling in your eye is the best teacher you never wanted.

Your cheek injury sounds rough, but eye sparks give that distinct burning sensation.

Spark from the outlet scared me so bad I dropped the mop.

Remember reading about a guy who got a metal splinter in his hand from a frayed cable, not even from the tool itself. It makes you realize danger comes from weird angles, like @lily57 said about that metal shaving. My own wake-up call was a hot piece of plastic that bounced off my shirt and landed on my neck, left a mark for weeks. The gear feels annoying until the exact second you need it, then you're just glad it was there. Now I'm that person putting on gloves and glasses to change a light bulb.
