Old welder at the union hall told me to stop chasing my puddle and let it run a little

Been fighting with overhead joints for three years and after he told me that I tried it the next day and got a way cleaner bead my first pass, has anyone else had an old timer give them one little tip that just clicked?

Oh, I hear you on that. @moore.beth is right, sometimes the simplest words from someone who's been at it forty years just make everything click. I had a similar moment with vertical up welding, old timer told me to count my steps like a dance and it fixed my timing completely.

Man I used to be one of those guys who thought I had to fight every weld, like if I wasn't wrestling with the puddle it meant I was doing it wrong lol. Took me way too long to realize backing off a little actually gives you way more control. Cranking the heat up and just letting it flow instead of trying to micromanage every millimeter made overhead so much less of a headache for me too. Sometimes the old timers just know when to tell you to get out of your own way.

Funny how the best advice ain't in any textbook or YouTube video... just some crusty old guy saying three words that change everything.
