Showerthought: That time I bent the rules on a steam pipe repair
Looking back, cutting corners just to meet a deadline wasn't worth the risk I took with everyone's safety.

My buddy’s shortcut cost him three fingers.

Wait, are we talking about a real safety issue or just some rule that slows everything down? Sometimes you have to use your own judgment in the moment, you know? If that pipe was going to blow and you fixed it fast, you probably saved the day. Not every rule fits every single situation perfectly. Why do we act like all rule bending is automatically bad?

Read an article last week about a factory incident where someone bent rules to save time, and it led to a major gas leak. @the_piper, I see where you're coming from with using judgment, but that story showed how often quick fixes backfire. Rules are there because people before us messed up and learned the hard way. Sure, there might be rare times to break them, but calling every case 'saving the day' ignores why we have safety protocols in the first place. Most times, what feels like a smart move in the moment just adds more risk.

Exactly. That factory story is the whole point. Rules feel slow because they were made for worst case scenarios. Someone's quick fix usually becomes the next cautionary tale. Real judgment means knowing you're not the exception. The rules already cover the "what ifs".
