Spent $80 on a fancy welding helmet and it left me in the dark

I picked up one of those auto-darkening helmets with all the bells and whistles last month, thought it would be a game changer for my boiler patch work. First time I fired up the torch, the lens went completely black and stayed that way for a good 30 seconds, nearly blew through a 1/4 inch plate. Has anyone else had a pricey helmet just fail on them like that, or did I just get a lemon?

Went completely black" reminds me of when my TV did that during a storm.

That's funny, but I actually see it the opposite way. My TV did that once and after a second it came back on its own, no big deal. This felt way more final and unsettling to me, like something completely shutting off for good.

Man that's exactly how I felt when my old car finally died on me. It didn't sputter or anything it just went silent and the lights dimmed out slow like it was tired. That final feel is totally different from something flickering back on.
