Update: my tube roller broke a bearing mid-roll on a Thursday and I finished the joint anyway
So we had a 3 foot diameter shell section to roll for a tank job over in Gary and the gear side bearing on our roller gave out about 60 percent through the pass. I had two guys with me and we still had 4 courses to go before Friday morning. Boss said pack up and reset Monday, but I pulled out a come along and a rosebud torch and we walked that plate around by hand for two and a half hours. Turned out rounder than what the roller would have done. One guy says running it that hot changes the grain and we should have scrapped it. Other guy says a rolled seam is a rolled seam and it passed the template. So what do you all think, is hand walking a plate with heat ever the right call when a machine lets go, or is that just asking for a callback later?
