Guy at my club in Springfield refused to play the bonus hole because it 'isn't real golf' and it started a whole fight
Last Saturday our foursome finished 18 all square at Springfield Muni, so the starter sent us to the bonus hole, a little 92 yard par 3 they put in behind the 9th green. One guy in our group, Dale, just picked up his ball and said he would not tee off on 'some carnival hole that doesn't count for handicap.' Two of us thought he was being a jerk since the club added it for exactly this, and the other guy said Dale had a point because there is no official scorecard line for it. I still say if the course built it and the starter sends you there, you play it, but now I am second guessing myself. Where do you all land, is refusing the bonus hole bad sportsmanship or a fair stance?
My buddy Rick ran into the same thing at his course in Peoria (they have a little extra hole they call the bonus hole too). He got paired up with a guy who flat out walked off and sat in the cart rather than play it, and Rick said the whole mood went sour for the beers after. Here is the thing that bugs me about Dale's side: the handicap excuse is kind of weak, since nobody is posting a four man all square match to their handicap anyway (match play results do not go in there). The course spent money to build the hole and the starter sent you out there, so skipping it is basically telling the rest of the group their time does not matter. Rick still plays with that guy sometimes but he says he never lets him anchor the bet again.
