My buddy at the muni in Des Moines swore you should aim 20 yards left of the bonus hole, and my scorecard still has the scar
So last Saturday at Grandview my golf buddy Dave tells me the trick on hole 19 is to aim way left because the green slopes hard right. I did it and my ball bounced off a cart path, hit a sprinkler head, and landed in the pond behind the tee box. Dave then sinks his putt for birdie and wins the tiebreak while I'm fishing my ball out with a rake. Turns out he read the slope totally backwards and just wanted me out of the way. Anyone else get hoodwinked by a friend's 'sure thing' tip on the extra hole?
Dave knew exactly what he was doing. That's not a bad tip, that's a con job with extra steps. What gets me is how specific he made it sound, "aim 20 yards left," like he's some course pro who mapped the slope with a level. Here's the thing though, guys like Dave always give you a number that sounds way too exact to be made up. That's the tell. If your buddy ever hands you a tip with a precise yardage and a confident nod, he's already planning his birdie celebration while you're wading through pond scum. Grandview's 19th has eaten better golfers than both of you, so at least you went down swinging at a real course.
