That one guy at the 19th hole who showed me the real trick to the bonus hole
I was at this little club outside of Portland last summer, the kind where the bonus hole is just a weird par 3 cut into a patch of woods behind the maintenance shed. I was lining up my shot, totally overthinking the angle, when an older guy walks up from the parking lot, just holding a single club and a half-smoked cigar. He didn't say hi, just pointed at the pin and goes, 'You're aiming at the flag. Aim at that dead tree root ten feet left instead.' I laughed it off but figured I had nothing to lose, so I tried it. Ball landed two feet from the cup. He nodded, walked back to his car, and drove off. That was three months ago and I still think about it every time I'm on a bonus hole. Has anyone else gotten advice from a random stranger that actually changed your whole approach to these weird extra holes?
