Book club picked a 900 page doorstop and we argued about page counts for 3 weeks
Our club voted on a book at the January meeting and nobody actually checked how thick it was until it showed up at my door, all 912 pages in tiny font. We then burned three whole meetings debating whether to split it into sections, switch picks, or just let people drop out, and one member brought a kitchen scale to weigh rival books. We finally agreed to read it in two chunks over eight weeks, but by then two people had quit and one guy admitted he just wanted to talk about the scale. Have other clubs set a page limit before voting, or do you all just suffer through it like us?
Isn't this just how every group decision goes, where the thing nobody checked becomes the thing everyone argues about? Same thing happens at potlucks and road trips: people spend more time on the rules than the actual plan. Setting a page limit before voting sounds smart and boring, which is usually the sign of a good rule.
