Book club talks feel more like polite chats now
Back in the day, our group would tear into a novel's weak characters and messy endings without holding back. Now, most comments are just about if the book was a fun read or not. I miss when people actually got mad about what the author was trying to say.

Yeah, the "too mean" thing hits home. I used to believe honest feedback had to be harsh to be real. But I saw how that just makes people shut down and stop listening. The point is to help someone improve, not to win the critique. If they feel attacked, you've already lost. Finding a way to say the hard stuff without being cruel actually takes more skill, doesn't it?
