Can we talk about book club spats over what characters eat?

In my experience, my club spent a whole meeting arguing if a book's picnic scene was important. One friend said it was just fluff, but I felt it showed the group's mood. That debate made me notice how often food hints at bigger themes in stories. Now, I kinda look at my own meals as tiny stories too. Your mileage may vary, but it's a small shift that stuck with me.

How could anyone call dinner scenes filler after what @daniel_gonzalez said?

Food matters. Got into a huge fight last book club because someone called the dinner scenes filler. Food is never just food in good books. It shows you who people are when they think no one's watching. My whole view changed after that argument, now I catch myself looking for clues in what characters eat too.
