Can we talk about how my 9 year old niece rewired how I think about book club picks
Last week my sister asked me to watch her kid for the evening, so I brought her along to our meeting in Amarillo where we were arguing over whether to read a 600 page history book or something shorter. She sat there quiet the whole time, then on the drive home she asked why the grown ups keep picking the boring looking books and then complaining about them. She said at school they pick the fun cover first and nobody has ever quit the reading corner. I know it sounds silly but our next pick got way less painful after we just went with the one that looked good on the shelf. How do you all get past the feeling that a book has to look serious to count?
Did you ever notice how kids just say the thing out loud that everyone else is tiptoeing around? A friend of mine ran a book group that kept dying off until she let people pick whatever caught their eye, and the whole thing came back to life. Sometimes the "serious" book is just a cover story for not wanting to say the pick bored us.
