Debate: should book clubs ditch the scheduled discussion guide and just let people talk about whatever hit them hardest?
My group in Austin fell apart last month when half of us stuck to the printed questions and the other half wanted to rant about the ending, which side are you on after that kind of trainwreck?

Heard about a friend's book club in Denver that had this exact same problem. They tried the whole structured discussion thing for a year and people just stopped showing up because nobody cared about the questions. Then one night someone started arguing about why the main character was so unlikable and it turned into a three hour debate that actually got people talking. Now they just pick a book, meet up, and whoever starts talking first sets the topic for the night. She says it's way better now because the conversations are real instead of forced. The only rule they kept is no phones and no spoilers for the first hour.
