I finally read 'The Midnight Library' for my club and the whole debate went sideways

We were supposed to discuss the book's themes, but Karen from Akron spent 45 minutes arguing the main character was just 'whiny' and derailed everything. Has anyone else had a single opinion completely tank a good discussion?

So what if she called the character whiny? It's a book club, not a therapy session. People are allowed to not like a character. Maybe the writing just didn't sell the pain for her. Not every sad story lands the same way for every reader. Sometimes a character just grates on you, and that's a valid thing to talk about too.

Honestly, I used to be the person who'd call a character like that whiny. Then I had a really bad year myself and reread a book I'd hated for that reason. It hit totally different. Suddenly all that indecision and regret on the page felt painfully real, not just annoying. It completely flipped how I judge characters now.

Yeah, used to agree with Karen. Then life got messy and I finally got it.
