Just realized our book club talks changed a lot after we picked a tougher book

Honestly, for like a year, our group in Springfield mostly read popular thrillers and talked about plot twists. It was fun, but the chats were pretty simple, you know? Then last month, we voted to read 'The Overstory' by Richard Powers. Ngl, the first meeting was rough. People were quiet. But over three weeks, something shifted. We started bringing in stuff from our own lives, like my friend who works in forestry talked about tree diseases. Another member shared an old family story about a farm. Instead of just saying if we liked it, we were really digging into the ideas. The book being harder made us work for it, and we ended up talking way more. Has your group ever had a book that totally changed how you all talk?

Oh man, that's so cool to hear. It's like the tough book forced everyone to bring more of themselves to the table, you know? We had a similar thing happen when my group tried a classic that was way out of our comfort zone. Suddenly we weren't just reviewing a story, we were actually connecting ideas to our own weird lives. Those are the best meetings, even if they start off quiet.

Totally get what you mean about the quiet start. Felt that way last month when we picked up a dense old novel. First meeting was just us staring at each other, but then someone shared how a character reminded them of their dad. Broke the whole thing open. Now we're all digging into the messy parts of our own stories because the book gave us permission. Makes the hard read worth it.

Remember my friend's book club that totally stalled on some boring history book?
