My book club in Phoenix spent 45 minutes arguing about whether the main character's cat was a metaphor

Last month at our meeting, one person was convinced the tabby in chapter 3 represented the protagonist's lost childhood, but another said it was just a cat that liked sitting on the porch. Has anyone else's group gotten totally sidetracked over something this small?

We spent twenty minutes debating if a lamp in chapter 2 was secretly a time machine...

Gotta love how a random lamp can turn into a whole conspiracy theory. Twenty minutes though, that's rookie numbers. We once spent a solid hour trying to figure out if a bookcase in a game was secretly a hidden door, even though the game had zero hidden doors anywhere. It was just a bookcase. But yeah, once you get that thought in your head, it sticks like glue and you can't stop until you've tried everything. Hope you guys at least ruled out time travel before moving on.

lol "debating if a lamp was a time machine" that reminds me of when me and my buddy spent like an hour arguing over whether a random mailbox in a game we were playing was actually a secret fast travel point. we were so sure about it. we tried everything approaching it from different angles, shooting it, jumping on top of it. turns out it was just a regular mailbox the devs put there for decoration. felt pretty dumb after that. but you know how it is once you get an idea stuck in your head you just cant let it go.
