My book club nearly fell apart over a character's age in 'Where the Crawdads Sing'

We spent 45 minutes at the library arguing if Kya was really believable as a 6-year-old living alone. Three people threatened to quit, and now I make everyone agree to stick to the plot before we start any book.

Man, I read somewhere that the author based Kya on a real survival story, but I still think people overthink book ages.

Wait, isn't overthinking characters the whole point of reading? You kind of have to dig into stuff like that to really get what the author was trying to say. Otherwise it's just a story about a girl in a swamp.
