Our book club spent 2 hours debating a single sentence in chapter 4

We meet at the downtown library branch on the first Thursday of each month. Last week, someone in our group pointed out that the main character in our current novel never once mentions his mother after page 50. That one observation turned into a full blown argument about whether the author meant it as a deliberate choice or just sloppy writing. Half the room thought it was a metaphor for emotional distance, the other half said we were overanalyzing a plot hole. We got so heated that we never even got to discuss the chapters we were supposed to cover. By the time we wrapped up, two people said they were going to reread the whole book with that detail in mind. Has anyone else had a tiny detail derail your entire meeting? How do you pull the group back on track without shutting down good conversation?

Used to think any tangent like that was just wasting everyone's time, but this post actually flipped my view. Now I see how a single throwaway line can crack open the whole book, and those debates are often the ones people remember most. Makes me wish our group got that fired up about something, even if it means skipping the planned chapters for once.
