Our book club split over a translation change, 3 versions later...

Last month we picked a classic Russian novel and half the room demanded the old translation while the other half swore the new one was clearer. We brought in three different versions to compare side by side and the arguments got so heated someone actually stormed out. Has anyone else had a translation pick cause a real rift in their group, or do we just need to stick to books originally written in English?
