Our book club voted out a memoir and it bugged me more than it should
Last month, my group in Portland picked "Educated" and three people said it was too self-indulgent. We swapped it for a thriller that everyone forgot by the next meeting, but I still think about that rejection. I get that not every story lands, but calling someone's real life boring feels different than not liking a plot. We've read 40 books in 5 years together, and the nonfiction picks always get the shortest discussion time, like facts are less worthy than fiction. Why do book clubs treat memoirs as a guilty pleasure instead of a real debate topic? Has anyone else felt outnumbered when they push for a true story and lose?
