Stopped by the old library downtown and saw the book club shelf is gone

I was picking up a part near the main library and decided to pop in. The whole second floor used to have a big shelf just for the local book club picks, with maybe 20 copies of each title. Now it's just a row of self-checkout machines and a single display of new releases. The librarian told me they cleared it out about six months ago because 'nobody uses physical copies for groups anymore.' It made me think about how we used to pass around the same dog-eared paperbacks. Does your club still meet with real books, or is it all e-readers now?

Hang on, they really cleared out the whole shelf six months ago? That's wild to me. I remember that shelf was always packed with people grabbing copies for their group discussions. Passing around a beat-up paperback with someone's notes in the margins is part of the fun for my club, we still do it that way. Can't imagine switching to all e-readers just for convenience, it loses that personal touch. The librarian saying 'nobody uses physical copies' just sounds off, my group would riot if we lost the shared library copies.

My book club still uses real books, mostly because we're all too cheap to buy e-readers.

Same here, my whole group refuses to switch. We hit up used bookstores and library sales, it's like a treasure hunt. I found a perfect hardcover of that last mystery we read for two bucks. Passing around a cracked paperback just feels more right than a screen.

Wait, but aren't e-reader apps free on your phone?
