That $200 'curated' book subscription box was a total letdown
I dropped two hundred bucks on a 3-month book subscription box that promised 'personalized literary picks' from a small press. Every book felt like leftover stock nobody wanted to buy - one had a bent spine and a note that looked like it was written by a bot. Has anyone else gotten burned by these fancy subscription boxes?

Maybe the real scam is paying for someone else's taste instead of trusting your own.

leftover stock nobody wanted to buy" really hit home for me. @fiona_kim you're so right that it feels like a scam when the handwritten note is that vague, it's like they're just checking boxes instead of actually caring about what they send. i've noticed this same pattern everywhere lately - people paying more for the "experience" of something personalized, but getting less actual effort put into it than a standard product would have.

Oh no, "leftover stock nobody wanted to buy" is exactly how I'd describe my own experience with a similar box. I got one that had a book with a massive coffee ring on the cover, like they didn't even bother to check it before shipping. The handwritten note was so generic it felt like a scam (it literally just said "enjoy this adventure" in messy cursive). I'm so sorry you wasted that much money, it really stings when something marketed as "curated" feels like a garage sale reject.
