That conversation with my book club's oldest member made me realize I've been judging characters way too fast

She said 'every villain has a mother who loved them' and now I can't stop thinking about how I dismissed the antagonist in our last read without considering their backstory, so has anyone else had a club member completely flip how you see a book?

Honestly, that reminds me of a podcast where they said every bad guy started as someone's kid.

Doubt every villain started as an innocent kid, plenty of people just turn out rotten on their own.

Totally agree. Worked with a guy once who would kick puppies for fun, and his childhood was totally normal parents, white picket fence, the whole deal. Some people just come out broken.
