That guided reading vs free reading debate in my book club went sideways fast
I suggested we try guided reading with discussion questions for our next meeting, and half the group walked out. We had 12 people show up to talk about "The Road" last Thursday, and the guided group stuck to the themes and symbolism while the free readers just talked about the movie. The guided readers actually finished the book and had real arguments. The free readers spent 20 minutes on the parking situation. Has anyone else had a book club split over structure like this?

Whoa, people walking out over reading formats? That seems a little dramatic. It's a book club, not a hostage situation.

Twelve people showing up and half walking out sounds like a personal problem, not a book club crisis. You're acting like guided reading is the only way to get value out of a book, but some people just want to hang out and chat without homework. I've been in book clubs where the "free readers" actually had better conversations because they weren't stuck on some list of questions someone found online. If your group can't handle a simple disagreement over format without storming out, then maybe the issue isn't the reading method, it's the people. You got 6 people left, which is plenty for a decent discussion, so just pick one style and stick with it next time instead of trying to force everyone into one box.

Yeah, "free readers" having better conversations is exactly what I've seen too. My old club had the same split, and the people who just read and came ready to talk about whatever stuck out to them always had way more interesting takes than the ones with printed discussion guides. Six people is still a solid group anyway, so just let the format be whatever works for the ones who actually wanna be there.
