That one book club meeting where nobody finished the book

We picked a 600 page history book and all 8 of us showed up having only read the first chapter. Somehow we spent 2 hours debating the author's intro paragraph alone, best discussion we ever had. Has anyone else had a failed reading turn into the best meeting of the year?
