That time my book club read a nonfiction pick and it nearly split us in half
We picked 'Evicted' for our monthly meeting and three members walked out halfway through because they said it was too depressing and not 'fun' for a book club. The rest of us thought it sparked some of the best conversations we've ever had about housing and poverty. How do you handle a debate when half the group wants fluff and the other half wants hard hitting topics?

Did yall have any kind of rules or expectations set before picking that book? Seems like a mismatch from the start if nobody knew what they were signing up for.

Buddy of mine joined a book club once where the host just said "it's a classic" and everyone went along without asking which one. Turned out to be some dense Russian novel with like 40 characters and nobody finished it except the host. Whole group basically died after that first meeting because everyone felt tricked into homework.

Went to one where the host picked Ulysses as a "fun summer read" and I still haven't forgiven myself.

Man, tough crowd. You can't please everyone so just pick what you want and let the chips fall.
