Unpopular opinion: those $40 "book club question cards" are a total scam
Back in March I grabbed a deck of 52 laminated discussion cards for $40 at a shop in Denver because our group kept running out of stuff to say. First session we pulled a card that read "How did the book make you feel?" and that was it, six of us staring at each other for $40. Half the deck was stuff like "What did you think of the ending?" which we already ask on our own. My friend Dana said she could've written the whole thing in 20 minutes on a napkin. What do you all use to keep conversation moving without buying a box of obvious questions?
How did the book make you feel" seems like a weak example to judge a whole deck by. I've been in plenty of book clubs and the hard part is not coming up with questions, it's getting people past the safe stuff. A stranger's card can push you somewhere your own brain won't go. You wouldn't know what to ask about because you're too close to the book, and the best question is usually the one that catches you off guard. Dana writing it on a napkin in 20 minutes also proves nothing, the napkin version is the version that only works for Dana.
